WSYL Preview: Gold Division is Stacked with Talent

The World Series of Youth Lacrosse is just over a week away.  Today Andrew Onodera has the fourth of a five part series previewing this year’s event taking place July 2nd through the 4th at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, northeast of Denver, Colorado.

The Gold Division will prove to be the most competitive division at this year’s tournament. The division has three teams ranked in the Top-10 across the world and two teams named to the watch list. In fact only one team in this division was not either ranked or named to the Inside Lacrosse watch list.

API Diamondbacks Gambrills, Maryland East Region #3
The API Diamondbacks could be the story of the tournament. This team has one of the most efficient offenses in the lacrosse world and showed it off in the East Qualifier. This team went 6-0 in the qualifying round and led the region in goals scored. If you think that’s impressive, wait until you hear that this team is made up of guys that are closer to age 12 than they are age 13. Coach Craig Hammel acknowledged this and admitted that, “age-wise we are probably the youngest team around.”

LI Express 2022 Long Island, New York North Region #5
LI Express is the highest ranked team that did not play for a regional championship. This team lost to Team 91 in the North Division semifinal. That was their only true slip-up however, as they finished with a 5-1 record and outscored opponents by 37 goals over the course of the weekend. Expect to see big things out of this Long Island team.

Mad Dog West 2022 San Diego, California West Region #9
Mad Dog West is ready to build off of last year’s success. In 2016, the boys from Southern California made it all the way to the semifinals. This year, they’re hoping to make it all the way to the championship, but in order to do that they’ll need to clean some things up offensively. In the West Regional, they only scored 34 goals in 5 games (12 of which came in the first game they played).

Eclipse Lacrosse New Canaan, Connecticut North Region Named to Watch List
Eclipse Lacrosse was placed into the toughest qualifier out there. Despite opening up with two losses to Igloo and Legacy, Eclipse was able to bounce back and eventually qualify. One of the reasons for their resiliency is their efficient offense. Coach Lou Garcia said that his team’s biggest strength is, “being able to posses the ball and get very high quality shots that our guys can finish.”

Team Iroquois Six Nations Confederacy International Named to Watch List
Team Iroquois will be competing in the WSYL for the first time this year. They’ll be the fourth nation to officially compete in the games. While little is known about this U13 Iroquois team, expect them to be very competitive. After all, at one point in time, players like Jeff Shattler, Brendan Bomberry, and the Thompson Brothers would have been playing for this team. This is one of the only true national teams to be competing in the World Series and they should be fun to watch.

Fredericksburg Patriots Fredericksburg, Virginia South Region Not Ranked
The Patriots are one of the view neighborhood teams that will be competing in this year’s tournament. This will be their first time competing in the WSYL. This will be the first we see of this team, as they did not compete in any qualifying tournament since the South Region did not hold a tournament this year. They’re the only team to qualify from the south region.
